One day, at a gathering of friends, I met Dr. Andy Mencia in person. We were all sitting around talking and I mentioned to a close friend that I needed to write an article about the hardships of life, about the paths we choose and, most importantly, who we choose to share this journey with. That's when I heard someone say my name. I stopped, looked, it was Dr. Mencia, he asked me if I could speak and I nodded yes.
Mencia, smiling, told me: Gabriel, I was looking at you and I heard your comment about the article you need to write. Coincidentally, today while I was doing my daily devotional, I wrote something about this. Can I send it to you?
I didn't think twice and said yes. I was already struck by how little I knew about Dr. Mencia, I already knew his life story, his journey, reading one of his writings would be a privilege.
As agreed, the next day Mencia sent me his writing and I simply loved it. It made me reflect on what I want in my life and who I want by my side. And that is precisely why our article today will be written by Dr. Andy Mencia. Just as your words moved me, I want you to be able to reflect on them too.
Mencia titled his text as “One’s Journey through a crowded path”.

Many times in our lives we cross through very crowded path and in many occasions we misinterpreted the moment as success others as blessings but did you ever stop to ask what is true and real and what is fake? I was walking through one of those crowded path for many years. I admired the ortochid trees and the beautiful roses; I enjoyed the fragrance of the exotic plants: and yes I entertained my eyes with the beautiful sunset right in front of my path.
It’s easy to fall in the spell of deception of life. I looked in one direction of my path and I could asure you of who were my real friends, then further down I could showed who I could always depend on unconditionally; further down I could show who was that one who vow to vowed to be by me in sickness and health. Further down I could proudly showed the product of my seed (or was really mine?). those who we sacrifice everything and denie them nothing. Those who we strive for a life better, much, much better than ours. Further down I saw those who read the word of God and filled me with fear, love and respect for righteousness; they made me feel that if the world turned against me they will for sure be there to pick me, up lift me up and sheer me on on my way to success.
I can tell you that as you look at your path as I did to mine, that there are many no so outstanding interesting plants in our path that we just by human nature tend to ignore. Theses are the friends that we consider last in our list; those we sort of forget to invite to the party or that we don’t send those greeting cards. These are the one that had humbled me to the point of appreciating the little things in life.
I can tell you that after God cleared my path of all the fake things before me, removing all the Roses and archeds that were not real. My path is wider now and now, like never before I get to appreciate the small pants with a huge fragrance. Those humble people that I many times did not thought twice of them.
Evernthough this is a joke, it make sense to my topic. Once a man took a bird and painted the feathers with yellow, green gold, blue, etc. and he sold it to a man who always wanted to own an exotic bird for a lots of money. One day the owner forgot the bird in the backyard and it rained that day. The rained washed the fake paint and the the three colors came to exist. We do do the same thing as this owner, when we think that we met the friend that we can stop bragging about; so much so that we tend to ignore those who had always been there for us.
Now let’s think where the fault lie? Actually it lies on us. We becomes to comfortable with our surrounding and we accept our given path as reality. Well, we learn (I hope) from our experience. Our path need not to be crowded but pleasant.
Remember that dead will come like a thief in the middle of the night; when we least expected; hence don’t waste too much time with your machete cutting down “fake” plants but spend time watering those insignificant plants with the unforgettable fragrance.
Love
I hope that Dr. Mencia's words make you reflect on your choices in the same way they did for me and, above all, that you learn from them.
